Audiobook Production

COBRA Music Studios is a contemporary recording studio specialising in audiobook production. We are integrated into the heart of the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre in Newport, South Wales which is conveniently located within a 2 minute walk of Newport Bus Station and a 6 minute walk from Newport Train Station, with direct routes to Cardiff, Bristol and London.

Our passion for audiobook and voice-over production has led us to collaborate with illustrious authors and narrators, lending life to literary gems under esteemed banners such as Hachette and Penguin. As well as producing in-house, we regularly work remotely with producers from around the globe via softwares such as ipDTL and Source Connect.

Our studio live room presents a beautiful intimate space, that is perfect for capturing and expressing your creativity. Ambient lighting creates the perfect atmosphere for your audiobook recording, and our bespoke gobos and acoustic panels from Blue Frog Audio in North Wales create the perfect tone. In the control room of the studio, we have a mixture of analogue and digital equipment, utilising hybrid recording techniques to get the best sound for your audiobook. At the helm of the control room is our dual Slate Raven MTi system, which is always a talking point with clients.

Whether you're an author looking to transform your written work into an engaging audiobook, or a publisher seeking recording services, COBRA Music Studios is your partner in bringing stories to life through sound. What People Say About Us

“From start to finish the whole experience of working with COBRA was amazing! Jordan is so helpful and professional. Each step of the process was explained and I was guided throughout the entire recording of my audiobook. I had not been in a studio before and had no prior experience of recording, but Jordan put me at ease and I absolutely loved the week! The end result was of exceptional quality - I couldn't of asked for more! I will definitely work with COBRA in the future.”

Sarah Carter, Upward

“I cannot recommend COBRA Music Studios enough! Really high-tech, with an engineer who knows exactly what he's doing. Jordan did a fantastic job of the recording and production, helping me a create a product I can be really proud of. Jordan is not only great at his job, he is also incredibly helpful and will bend over backwards to make sure that the finished product is highly polished and professional. If I do any more recording, it will definitely be with Jordan and COBRA Music Studios, in the wonderful location of the Riverfront Theatre in Newport.”

Brain Back, The Answer to Life

“The best recording studio I’ve ever had the pleasure to work in - and that includes studios in London and Bristol. Jordan is brilliant: a great engineer who knows his stuff inside-out but who also helps you enjoy every moment. Would recommend to anyone. I hope to go back soon!”

Audiobook Recording FAQs

How long will it take to read my book?

ACX states that on average, one hour of finished audio will have on average 9,300 words. It generally takes two hours to narrate what will become one hour of finished audio. If you apply this to your book, you can assume that a 70,000 word book will be approximately 8 hours in length, so a recording time of around 16 hours.

How long will it take to produce my audiobook after I have recorded? It generally takes three hours to edit and process one hour of final audio. Then there’s the proof listen which involves listening to the audiobook from start to finish and making adjustments where necessary after finishing the stream. You can expect to receive your audiobook within two to three weeks of the recording date.

How much can I earn from ACX? You can choose to be non-exclusive or exclusive to ACX. If you go with the latter, you can earn up to 40% in royalties vs 25% when you opt for non-exclusivity.

How much will my audiobook sell for in stores? Typically, the price set for your title on Audible, Amazon, and iTunes is based on its length, with longer audiobooks priced higher than shorter audiobooks. Read more here.

Do I need to be a professional narrator to narrate my book? Not at all! We have worked with a diverse background of self-published authors to narrate their books so that they can keep everything in house. In the pre-production stage before the recording, we go through everything that you need to know ahead of the recording.
